D is for Dumb Dufflepud

Some of my favorite characters in C.S Lewis book 'the Chronicles of Narnia' have got to be the dufflepuds, they're funny, stubborn, cheerful foolish fellas and they sort of remind me of our human nature...
"The duffers are loyal to one another, and especially to their leader, whom they believe without question and fawn over in constant agreement. They are, however, suspicious of magic or change. They are known to be cowardly, though they like to boss and threaten when given the chance. Their most notable trait, however, is their constant foolishness, their behavior displaying their true, innate stupidity. In spite of all this, they are fairly good-natured people."

we are a set of intelligent people, but sometimes we are too smart for our own good.  We love to 'yes sir' follow the leader without questions...  because sometimes we just cant be bothered with thinking for ourselves...Its easier to let others do it. Thus we read reports in the papers, and we refuse to have our own opinions, the next thing we're ranting on the social networks about issues we have no clear understanding of, just because someone somewhere thinks that's what it should be.
"That's right, that's right," said the Chief Voice. "You don't see us. And why not? Because we're invisible."
"Keep it up, Chief, keep it up," said the Other Voices. "You're talking like a book. They couldn't ask for a better answer than that."
Or like Tracie Morgan, my favorite fictional wag says "Remember the designers know best. Who are you to argue with Donatella Versace if she’s deemed that her top is worth ten times the prize of another?"
you don't ask questions, you nod and save to buy the 50times more expensive clothes because in the words of Tracie... " If you try on a 50 pound top that looks great, then you see a 500pound top that looks terrible, go for the 500 every time.”  That's what fashion dictates, and that's what you've got to do without questions... like zombies, like my dear dufflepuds.
"why bless me, if i haven't gone and left out the whole point," said the chief voice.
"that you have, that you have," roared the other voices with great enthusiasm. "No one couldn't have left it out cleaner and better. Keep it up chief, keep it up"
some major butt kissers the dufflepuds were. Bless their poor souls, this got me cracking...

"A few months ago they [the Duffers] were all for washing up the plates and knives before dinner: they said it saved time afterwards. I've caught them planting boiled potatoes to save cooking them when they were dug up. One day the cat got into the dairy and twenty of them were at work moving all the milk out; no one thought of moving the cat." Ch. 11 : The Dufflepuds Made Happy

So much like humans when we try to live by our own wisdom and push God to the backseat, everything is chaotic, we do things the wrong way and we mess up our life.
According to Joyce Meyer, "the nature of our flesh wants to conquer, overcome its problem its own way, so it can get all the glory." But then the flesh forgets that its wisdom is the foolishness of God, incomparable to his wisdom, and so we always end up hurt or going through unnecessary stress when we do things our foolish way.

If only we would pray and ask for his wisdom "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him."James 1:5
It'll save us the stress and silliness of carrying the jars of milk out, and living the cat in... or planting boiled potatoes, or washing plates before using them or staying in the wilderness longer than we should or marrying the young person or......

It's about time we stop being dufflepuds.

*************
Just read this on Narnia web "While no direct inspiration is known for the Dufflepuds, it seems reasonable to see the characters as a loving parody of humankind. Their doglike devotion to the Chief, their cheerful cowardice, their stubbornness, and their foolish ideas are all human traits that have been harshly satirized by many authors. Lewis points out these foibles without bitterness, choosing instead to focus on the funny side of the creatures and delight his readers with their silliness."
I'm not so far off from the tree, i always knew i had a connection with Mr. Lewis, we think the same things. lol.

They were in the latest Chronicle of Narnia movie, and were hilarious. I guess most of us are like that.

  2. I love C.S Lewis, plain and simple. And I love this post. Clearly, the Dufflepuds are a reflection of humankind as a whole. Isn't that why "our righteousness is like a filthy rag before God?" Thank God for His embracing arms guiding us again into the right path.

Even fools will not go astray when they walk in The Way (God's way) >>> Isaiah 35:8 says, "A highway shall be there, and a road, And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, But it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, Shall not go astray."

@jaycee the beauty of God, he makes the foolish things of the world wise. if only we knew how beautiful it is to walk with him, we wouldn't spend our time in endless pursuit of happiness.
