C is for Curiouser and Curiouser

How do you explain the need to watch movies on crime and same time frown at actual crime in the society?
Some of my favorite heroes are villains. The coolest people are the 'bad' guys in the movies, like seriously, Denzel in American gangster was cooler than school, John Travolta in face off and on and on and on. I can watch Tony Montana and quote him, and be upset at the end of scarface that he had to die.
I can watch the godfather and have daydreams about being in the scene, eating pasta with Michael, being Don Corleone's favorite person, the first female Consigliere the world ever had... and send people to sleep with the fishes, i can watch all that and read all that and more and feel good, but I read the news when the movies stop and i can't stand the stories of robberies and murders and drug pushers and kidnappers et co in the world around me....I want them punished, I don’t want them to get away, I want them locked up forever. What a contradiction.

Yesterday, someone from a famous family(wouldn't want to mention names) told a story, they paid a 350m ransom for their kidnapped mother, i was in shock!!!!.... I wanted to hear the rest of the story, how the Nigerian cops police err olopa apprehended the kidnappers at some point and got the mother and money back, nollywood hollywood style.... the story ended there.
It got me thinking, if it was in the movies, we'd be hailing the criminals, calling them geniuses, like we did for the cool oceans 12 gang. They'd be our heroes; we'd get up in the cinema applauding their brilliance as they walk away into the sunset with 350mils in cash.* a minute of silence here for that money*

Curiouser and curiouser!” Cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English). “Now I’m opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! Good-bye, feet!” (for when she looked down at her feet they seemed to be almost out of sight, they were getting so far off). “Oh, my poor little feet, I wonder who will put on your shoes and stockings for you now, dears? I’m sure I shan’t be able! I shall be a great deal too far off to trouble myself about you: you must manage the best way you can—but I must be kind to them,” thought Alice, “or perhaps they won’t walk the way I want to go! Let me see. I’ll give them a new pair of boots every Christmas.
Curiouser and curiouser I get like Alice, i’ve probably had a bite from that piece of cake too, and my reality and my fantasy have grown so far apart, that most things that are accepted in la la land are vehemently fought against on the outside.
In the book 'crime films and society' Nicole Rafter says crime films provide a safe space for fantasies of rebellion… bla bla bla

Does this then mean that there’s a robber, a druggie, a murderer and all the bad bad things evil vices we frown at in us? Waiting to be unleashed but held bound by our need to keep reality blemish free, like Alice's need to be kind to her feet  …. Thus we embrace the violence and the crime in movies to keep us sane by reliving in them what we've been restrained from doing in reality?
of cos there are those crazy ones who actually live what they watch, that's why we see such craziness around us.
I'm not crazy... i'm just curious.

**** i'm long over my fascination with action films.

  5. This is why I refuse to spend 2/3 hours watching horror/action movies. There's enough ugliness in real life. I don't need to add ugly to my recreation time. This is sad indeed... At least the mother was returned alive, sha. We thank God!
